Change for New Zealand

Genetic Modification (GMO policy)

Problem: New Zealand's current regulatory regime is ill-equipped to deal with advances in Genetic modification. The system prevents New Zealand industries from employing GMO’s outside of Lab innovation. This means are not able to take advantage of developments of GMO crops that are more sustainable, nutritious have higher yields and contain bio-pesticides.

Solution: New Zealand should adopt a system that encourages innovation and production of genetically modified products so that we are able to better capture the benefits of such technology

Proposal: Pre-market approval system America has been very successful at encouraging innovation around GMO’s. The american system relies on a pre-market approved industrial GMO crop system. American agencies responsible for crop regulation monitor crops and plants for risks or irregularities. These agencies can then ban crops that break rules or pose a threat to the ecosystem.

Marijuana legalisation

Problem: Marijuana prohibition has not worked. The vast majority of New Zealanders will have consumed marijuana before they turn 21. The law is only yielding a huge cost that comes with an array of harms, with no pay off in terms of deterrence.

Solution: Marijuana should be legalized not only as a matter of personal freedom but also as a matter of practical policy goals of harm reduction.

Proposal: Marijuana should be sold in a legal market that can be regulated and taxed according to its cost to society. The two main goals behind this reform should be to maximise personal freedom and minimise harm.

Drug reform

Problem: The world has waged a war on drugs for a century now. Drug prohibition has become a problem in and of itself - causing perhaps more harm than the drugs it is supposed to protect us from.

Solution: Ending the war on drugs.

Proposal: All drugs should be legalised, regulated, and taxed according to their harm. For highly addictive substances such as heroin and methamphetamine, a system similar to that of Switzerland should be implemented.
